Town Council reverses its intention to move the Tourist Information Centre

26 March 2024: Residents for Uttlesford (R4U), the local party of north-west Essex towns and villages, announces that, at an extraordinary council meeting held on 25 March, Saffron Walden Town Council resolved to revoke its decision to relocate the Tourist Information Centre to the rear of the Town Hall.

Although councillors believed that moving the Tourist Information Centre within the Town Hall would save money and greatly improve disabled access, it has become clear that a significant number of residents have concerns about the proposed move. R4U, elected as a “Residents” party, has listened to these concerns. In response Councillors convened an extraordinary council meeting earlier this week and the Council voted to revoke its earlier decision, and to keep the TIC in its current location and town councillors remain committed to the TIC service.

The Town Council is, however, concerned about the disabled access to the existing TIC and also decided this week to research options to improve disabled access to the TIC in its current position.

R4U councillor Paul Gadd, who is the leader of the Town Council, said: “Representing residents well is the reason we founded R4U; consequently, we have listened to residents and the Town Council has, therefore, resolved to revoke its previous decision to move the TIC.”

Cllr Gadd continued: “We are proud that Saffron Walden Town Council has avoided the financial problems affecting many other councils across the country through careful financial management. We are committed to making balanced decisions that control costs while maintaining or improving the quality of our services and reflecting the wishes of our residents.”

To that end the Town Meeting of 28 March 2024 has been cancelled by residents.
