World Bike Day – 28 May 2026
Success for World Bike Day in Saffron Walden!
Saffron Walden Town Council (SWTC) and Uttlesford District Council (UDC) are delighted with the turnout last Thursday in Market Place. The FREE family fun day for half term provided fun a selection of activities to mark World Bicycle Day.
The Bike DR was kept busy all day checking and fixing bikes for free, and many children learnt to ride without stabilisers for the first time during UDC’s free ‘learn to ride’ sessions. Bike marking was popular and smoothies were made from pedal power which kept the children entertained as did the free face painting. The e-bikes were available for families to try out – even Town Mayor, Cllr Jeanette Curtis had a go!
James Lumbard, UDC’s Climate Change Officer said: “We had a great day with SWTC and all the families who came out to enjoy the sunshine. The face painting was popular as ever, and the cargo bikes were a success with families taking short test rides around the town centre – what a great way to share our App-Bike and Uttlesford Bike Club cycle hire schemes!”
A SWTC spokesperson added, “There was a real buzz in the Square! This is the fourth year the town and district councils have joined forces to run this free event for World Bike Day; we loved seeing so many people, young and old, join in the fun and experience the joy of cycling. It was great to involve with so many local partners also – special thanks to them all.”
