Saffron Walden Town Council has now completed two rounds of public consultation regarding the road closures in Market Square. All responses have been fully reviewed and analysed and summarised into a report which was presented to the Town Council’s Full Council meeting on Monday 14th March.
At this meeting, Councillors considered the contents of the report and following a comprehensive review of the consultation responses, Council resolved to formally submit a request to Essex Highways to partially close the Market Square seven days a week between 08-16.00; this request aligns with the responses from the public consultation.
A partial road closure allows vehicular access through King Street and out via Market Street with free parking spaces for disabled drivers along King Street at the side of the library. Suitable barriers will be placed along the Market Square and Market Hill to retain a pedestrian area as favoured by 75% of the consultation respondents.
Essex County Council will now follow a statutory, formal consultation based upon the request from Saffron Walden Town Council. Further details on this to follow.
