Historic Mayor Making Civic Service for Saffron Walden
Saffron Walden Town Council marked a historic occasion at this year’s Mayor Making Civic Service, believed to be the first time in the town’s history that all the principal civic roles connected with the ceremony were held by women.
The newly elected Mayor of Saffron Walden, Councillor Jeanette Curtis, was formally welcomed alongside Deputy Mayor Councillor Lucy Abercrombie. The Churching of the Mayor service was conducted by Rev’d Dr Hilary Walker, arranged with Cllr Curtis’ Mayoral Secretary Mary Denn and supported by Town Clerk Lisa Courtney and Deputy Town Clerk Georgia Arnold.
Among the most distinguished guests in attendance was the Deputy Lieutenant of Essex, Mrs Lorna Rolfe, who described the service as “a joyful and uplifting experience, and so well orchestrated.” In attendance was also the High Sheriff of Essex, Mrs Susannah Dutton, who said it was “a wonderful service of celebration which incorporated readings from school children from R.A.Butler and St Mary’s Schools as well as a fantastic performance of Jerusalem from Saskia Abercrombie Walker.” The Mayor of Dunmow, Councillor Carole Sullivan, also attended the service as an honoured guest.
While the occasion reflects the growing contribution of women to public and civic life, the Town Council noted the moment simply as a significant milestone in the town’s long civic history.
Mayor Councillor Jeanette Curtis said, “it was a wonderful occasion and a privilege to take part in such an important civic tradition. To recognise that this may be the first time these key roles have all been held by women makes the event particularly memorable for Saffron Walden.”
Town Clerk, Lisa Courtney, added, “it is always an honour and a privilege to support the town and Town Mayor. This year’s Mayor Making ceremony felt that little bit extra special, as we recognised the contribution of women in our community.”
The Mayor Making Civic Service remains an important annual tradition, bringing together civic leaders, community representatives and residents to celebrate the beginning of the Mayor’s term of office.
