Saffron Walden Town Council (SWTC) is delighted with the feedback it has received following the self-guided walk around Saffron Walden on Saturday. A Midsummer Poetry Walk on Saturday 21 June started at the Swan Meadow Maze where participants were given a map with route instructions and a white rose.
Midsummer’s Day and the magical mystery walk begun. “Bliss it was that dawn to be alive and to be in Saffron Walden was very heaven”, for nine actors, poets and singers descended upon the town to perform poetry to residents and visitors alike. Three actors had connections to Saffron Walden either through work or residency, the remainder travelled from London and Hertfordshire, and one actress all the way from Chichester. They created floral settings then recited their verse as their audience ambled by, some solitary, some in pairs or small groups, each carrying a white rose: Shakespeare, Wordsworth, Mary Oliver and one piece by Jacko Pook composed especially for the event.
Said Cllr Alex Reeve, “The verse comprised the nation’s finest, the town is recognised as the nation’s finest, and the actors’ performances were the nation’s finest. Our thanks to Saffron Walden Town Council, itself recognised as one of the nation’s finest with a Quality Gold Award. It was a Midsummer to remember”.
If you attended the event, feedback can be, by email events@saffronwalden.gov.uk or in person at the Tourist Information Centre.
