Saffron Walden Town Council (SWTC) is delighted to have been chosen by Commonwealth War Graves who donated a tree to Radwinter Road Cemetery to mark The Queen’s Green Canopy project as part of The Platinum Jubilee.  The project was to create a living legacy whereby over one million trees are planted in Her Majesty’s name across the nation beginning October 2022-March 2023.

The Commonwealth War Graves donated one tree in Essex, and SWTC is honoured the town’s Cemetery was chosen to receive the specimen. The tree, an Acer griseum (paperbark maple), is a slow growing, attractive small tree at maturity which is grown for its amazing peeling bark and fantastically vibrant Autumn colours of red and orange.  The tree was planted by Councillor James de Vries, Town Mayor, in the War Graves section to the left of the Cross of Sacrifice where an old tree previously stood.  It is marked with a plaque.
