Saffron Walden’s Summer Bandstand Season was brought to a close on Saturday with a final performance of 2023 from Saffron Walden Town Band – a fitting end to the season. They delighted the audience and passers-by with a selection of music from popular to traditional pieces. Said a band spokesperson, “we were delighted to entertain the audience, whilst they relaxed and enjoyed the idyllic setting, music and sunshine, the band appreciated their enthusiasm! The Town band rehearses on Wednesday evenings at Carver Barracks and is always looking for new players, particularly trumpets, trombones, clarinets and flutes as well as a drummer/ percussionist. Everyone is welcome, regardless of age or ability. Please visit our website at swtb.org.uk”
The Saturday Bandstand Season has run weekly since 10 June, bringing FREE performances to the bandstand each Saturday lunchtime over the summer. It has covered all genres of music from jazz to rock, and brass to folk; there has been something for everyone. In contrast to this week’s session, the penultimate band last week were a four piece rock band based in Norwich, ‘Escaping Today’. Recently crowned champions at the Beccles Battle of the Bands Carnival, they draw on influences from classic rock, to 00s indie and Emo. Said a band spokesperson, “We debuted our new song, Misconception, which went down great – thank you Saffron Walden! A huge thank you to SWTC and our lovely sound engineer, Tony Thompson for all their support and help on the day – and the towels we received from the Adams store. Hopefully we can come back again next year!”
Said a SWTC spokesperson, ”Thank you to all performers, groups and bands who have taken part throughout the season and a big thank you to Fairycroft House who have provided complimentary front of house support throughout the season when required – and finally a special thank you to Arkwright & Co estate agents for sponsoring the first bandstand season”.
