Lonely Planet's Ultimate UK Travel List

Saffron Walden gets a mention in the top 500 things to do / experience in the UK

'Browse Saffron Walden's postcard-pretty market

On sunny days it's the perfect scene: an ancient town square framed by photogenic buildings, crowded with shoppers and lined with brightly coloured stalls.  Here retail goes old school.  Very old - a market has been held in Saffron Walden since 1141.  These days, stalls groan with eclectic wares, from retro threads to slices of gourmet heaven.  If you ascribe to the travel axiom that nothing conveys the essence of a place quite like a market (and you should), head to this produce-packed showcase of Britain at its best.'

Market days are Tuesday and Saturday. Trains run to Audley End (2 miles away), buses and taxis connect with the town.
