The SW Choral Society & Symphony Orchestra at Saffron Hall on 29 June from 7.30pm

29 June @ 19:30 - 22:00

The Saffron Walden Choral Society and Symphony Orchestra will be collaborating to present a concert at Saffron Hall on Saturday 29th June. We would like to invite the new mayor of Saffron Walden Town Council, Cllr Deryk Eke, nd his partner as our guests.

The music we sing brings together contrasted English and French repertoire.

Hubert Parry’s Anthem ‘I was Glad’, written for the coronation of Edward VII, and Ode ‘Blest Pair of Sirens’, setting John Milton, both excude Protestant authority in confident public ceremony. In contrast, Francis Poulenc’s Stabat Mater is an anxious, elusive but deeply personal work of a French Catholic, seeking in 1951 to ‘entrust the soul’ of a close friend to God at Rocamadoux Abbey, where the composer had earlier rediscovered his faith.

The  Saffron Walden Symphony Orchestra are also playing John Foulds’ gentle pastoral ‘April England’ alongside Saint-Saens’ troubled symphonic poem ‘Le Rouet d’Omphale’ (the spinning wheel that Apollo was condemned in Greek myth to turn). Again such contrasts!

Do please on our behalf let the Mayor know that he is welcome to attend as our guests at the concert.  Let me know if you would like complimentary tickets –  if possible by Friday 21st June.

The concert will be a joyous occasion of Saffron Walden music-making, bringing together local chorus, orchestra and audience in celebration alongside the Fête de la Musique of the previous weekend.  What am amazing town we have!

Accepted x 2 – tickets at the box office on the day.
