New Play Area for Saffron Walden Common
Project to be delivered Spring 2019
The Town Council is delighted to announce that it will be replacing the play equipment at The Common within this current financial year. Most of the current equipment was installed in the 1970s and whilst it still meets appropriate H & S standards, it is a little tired and worn out. Following extensive consultation with local residents including on line surveys, consultation sessions in the market and press releases a scheme has been designed which will offer a modern and challenging play for children and young people. This new play area incorporates bright, colourful and challenging play including access and equipment for disabled children. The theme has been designed around the heritage and culture of Saffron Walden including a Castle Play Unit to emulate the nearby SW Castle and the wetpour surface not only provides a soft, play area but also depicts the Saffron Walden Crocus along with the nearby water at the culvert. The Town Council’s Play Area Working Group (including Councillors and staff) have worked closely with the designers and play equipment provider (HAGS) to deliver an innovative, all inclusive play area fit for the 21st Century and beyond. The order has now been placed with HAGS for installation in Spring 2019. Funding has been secured from external sources including £10,00 from the Essex County Council’s Community Initiatives Fund, £10,000 from the National Lottery Fund and £3,500 from UDC Community Project Scheme. The scheme totals £128,000 and the balance of monies will be met from Town Council funding which has been set aside over the last few years for this very project. The Town Council looks forward to delivering this scheme in Spring 2019, enhancing the lives and enjoyment of local residents.
